February 27, 2012 Contacts: Neil Tickner, 301 405 4622 or ntickner@umd.edu UMD and Chinese Scientists To Launch Global Change Research Partnership Feb. 28WHAT: COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Researchers from the University of Maryland and Beijing Normal University will officially launch a new Joint Center on Global Change and Earth System Science to investigate, among other things, the impact of climate change on crop productivity. The research will be conducted in both countries. Key participants will discuss initial projects - including a new comprehensive database tracking and projecting variations in crop production worldwide. Other research will focus on changes in land cover and foliage, as well as land use. Following the announcement, key scientists from the project will hold a mini-symposium to discuss new and ongoing research. The new center grows out of successful past collaborations between the researchers, and talks conducted by University of Maryland President Wallace Loh last year when he visited China with Governor O'Malley.
