COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland again has placed among the world's top universities with a rating of 38th in the 2011 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). The ARWU, which is maintained by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, ranks Maryland No. 13 among U.S. public universities and No. 29 among all U.S. universities. In a separate ARWU rating of broad subject fields the university placed 11th in the category of Engineering/Technology and Computer Science, 21st in the Social Sciences and 25th in Natural Sciences and Mathematics. The ARWU top five universities in the world were: (1) Harvard University, (2) Stanford University, (3) Massachusetts Institute of Technology, (4) University of California, Berkeley, and (5) University of Cambridge (England). Universities in the United States made up 53 of top 100 slots (representing 101 schools because of a tie for the 100th spot).
