Maryland Named a Top 20 Public University for 11th Consecutive Year

College Park, Md. -- The University of Maryland has been ranked 19th among national public universities, according to an annual survey released today by U.S. News & World Report. The ranking marks the 11th consecutive year the University has been named a top 20 public university.

UMD was ranked 58th among all national universities for 2013. According to the publication, UMD has 25 undergraduate and graduate programs in the top 10; 46 in the top 15; 61 in the top 20; and 72 in the top 25.

The A. James Clark School of Engineering was ranked 23rd nationally for undergraduate programs -- moving up one spot from 2012. The school's aerospace engineering program was ranked in 9th place.

The Robert H. Smith School of Business was ranked 21st nationally -- with eight specialties ranking in the top 25. Those include:

- Management Information Systems ranked 6th
- Supply Chain Management/Logistics ranked 8th
- Quantitative Analysis ranked 11th
- Entrepreneurship ranked 12th
- Management ranked 13th
- Marketing ranked 15th
- Finance ranked 17th
- International Business ranked 25th

UMD was recognized for Outstanding Undergraduate Programs, including enriched out-of-classroom offerings that education experts identify as key and link to student success. UMD was cited as a leader in Learning Communities and Service Learning. UMD offers undergraduate students 15 living-learning programs -- with a 16th program, Advanced Cybersecurity Experience for Students, coming in fall 2013. A majority of UMD's 27,000 undergraduate students are active in service activities and community engagement -- including first-year students in College Park Scholars who participate in the annual service day. Each fall, more than 900 students kick-off their academic career by participating in a day of service at 29 sites throughout the Washington, D.C. area, ranging from homeless shelters and research farms to food pantries and community parks.

Also notable - according to U.S. News, UMD has the third lowest tuition rate among the top 20 public universities -- behind the University of Florida and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill for in-state tuition and Ohio State University-Columbia and the University of Wisconsin-Madison for out-of-state tuition.
