UMD Retains Top 40 World Ranking, Top 20 Among Public Research Institutions

College Park, Md. -- The University of Maryland maintained its high ranking and became the highest ranking Washington D.C.-area public research institution in the 2012 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). The ARWU, which is released each year by the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, ranks UMD 38 overall in the world, 29th nationally, and 13th among U.S. public research institutions.

Separate ARWU rankings by field place Maryland in the top 25 in natural sciences and math (24th), engineering/technology and computer science (14th), and social sciences (22nd).
