April 23, 2009 Contacts: Herb Hartnett, 301 405 4628 or hhartnet@umd.edu iSchool Rises to No. 10 in Nation, Boasts Five Top 10 Subject CategoriesUM's iSchool, the College of Information Studies, assumes a Top 10 ranking in the latest U.S. News & World Report Graduate School Rankings, with Counseling/Personnel, in the College of Education, and Criminology, in the College of Behavioral & Social Sciences, maintaining their perennial No. 1 national rankings. Information Studies' subject specialties earned a raft of Top 10 notices: Archive/Preservation, No. 5; Digital Librarianship, No. 9; Information Systems, No. 10; School Library Media, No. 6; and Services for Children/Youth, No. 6. UM's other Top 20 overall graduate programs ranked this year are the Clark School of Engineering (No. 17) and the College of Behavioral & Social Sciences' Sociology program (No. 20). Clark School's aerospace engineering program was No. 9. The College of Education was ranked No. 24 nationally, with its Education Psychology sub-category earning a No. 4 ranking. Criminology's home base, the College of Behavioral & Social Sciences, also had Top 10 specialties in Psychology's Industrial and Organizational program, No. 5, and Sociology's Sex & Gender (No. 5) and Population (No. 8) programs. The Smith School of Business' Information System specialty ranked No. 6. English, in the College of Arts and Humanities, had its African American Literature program listed at No. 10.
The Department of Psychology, overall, made the biggest jump of any program, going from No. 55, in 2006, the last time psychology was ranked, to No. 40 this year. BSOS's Department of Economics was ranked No. 22 in the nation.
