COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Since 1993, the University of Maryland's Office of Undergraduate Studies has selected a special book - a First Year Book - that is given to all incoming freshmen. "We want a book that stimulates discussion," says Assistant Dean Lisa Kiely, who oversees the program. The 2007 First Year Book does just that.
As in the past, this First Year Book is not a required read. Instead, it is up to faculty members to decide if the book fits into their curriculum. "It's often used for UNIV 100, HONORS 100 and GEMS 100 (all freshmen level introductory courses). Some books fit better into the CORE curriculum but it's up to faculty to determine," Kiely says. Come Hear author Mike Tidwell on Oct. 23 at 4 p.m. in the Stamp Student Union Hoff Theater. "It's also used as a unifying tool for the campus community. How will we discuss it as a community, how does it affect us? This year those questions are very important and the campus has already made climate change an important issue."
Newsdesk recently asked Dean Kiely about Maryland 's First Year Book program, how The Ravaging Tide was selected and what impact it might have on the campus community. Read more in our "Conversation With... Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Studies Lisa Kiely."
