First Year Book Investigates "The Ravaging Tide."

First Year Book Program at the University of Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Since 1993, the University of Maryland's Office of Undergraduate Studies has selected a special book - a First Year Book - that is given to all incoming freshmen. "We want a book that stimulates discussion," says Assistant Dean Lisa Kiely, who oversees the program. The 2007 First Year Book does just that.

Author
Mike Tidwell

All freshmen students are being given a free copy of The Ravaging Tide by author and filmmaker Mike Tidwell. Perhaps best known for predicting the Katrina disaster in his 2003 book, Bayou Farewell: The Rich Life and Tragic Death of Louisiana's Cajun Coast, Tidwell has written a new book that takes a critical look at global warming and the impact humans are having on our planet. "The Ravaging Tide (not only) provides an opportunity to debate the science but help students understand their role in stopping climate change," says Kiely.

As in the past, this First Year Book is not a required read. Instead, it is up to faculty members to decide if the book fits into their curriculum. "It's often used for UNIV 100, HONORS 100 and GEMS 100 (all freshmen level introductory courses). Some books fit better into the CORE curriculum but it's up to faculty to determine," Kiely says.

Mike Tidwell's book - The Ravaging Tide is the 2007 First Year Book at the University of Maryland."It's also used as a unifying tool for the campus community. How will we discuss it as a community, how does it affect us? This year those questions are very important and the campus has already made climate change an important issue."

Newsdesk recently asked Dean Kiely about Maryland 's First Year Book program, how The Ravaging Tide was selected and what impact it might have on the campus community. Read more in our "Conversation With... Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Studies Lisa Kiely."
