'Counseling/Personnel' in Education a No. 1; Physics' Has 2 Programs at No. 5

The annual U.S. News & World Report rankings of the best graduate schools again placed the University of Maryland among the nation's best.

A roster of excellence from each of UM's colleges that had disciplines ranked in the current issue of U.S. News that was published today.

Heading the list are Top 5 programs, headed by the College of Education's Counseling/Personnel Services program at No. 1. The College of Computer, Mathematical & Physical Sciences and its physics department claimed two top five honors, for Plasma Physics and Atomic/Molecular/Optical Physics.

  • College of Computer, Mathematical & Physical Sciences
    In the Sciences, UM netted 13 Top 25 rankings.

  • College of Education (No. 25)
    In Educaton, UM netted 11 Top 25 rankings, including a No. 1 in Counseling/Personnel Services.
  • School of Public Affairs(No. 25)
    In Public Affairs, UM netted 6 Top 25 rankings and a new ranking in Public Policy Administration.
  • Clark School of Engineering (No. 17)
    In Engineering, UM netted 9 Top 25 rankings, including new rankings in Biomedical/Bioengineering and Chemical Engineering.
  • Smith School of Business(No. 39)
    In Business, UM netted 6 Top 25 rankings, including a dramatic rise in Entrepreneurship, from No. 19 to No. 13.
  • College of Behavioral & Social Sciences
    Significant gains in each of these three rankings.
