About A. James Clark

A. James ClarkJim Clark, a 1950 civil engineering graduate and a member of the University of Maryland College Park Foundation Board of Trustees, is the chairman and CEO of Clark Enterprises, Inc. (CEI) in Bethesda, Maryland. CEI was formed in 1972 to oversee the management of a variety of business interests including real estate and commercial and residential construction. CEI includes The Clark Construction Group, one of the nation's largest general contractors.

In 1994, Mr. Clark contributed $15 million in endowment for support of the university's engineering school. The school was subsequently named in his honor. Mr. Clark was honorary chairman of Maryland's last fundraising campaign, Bold Vision Bright Future, which concluded in 2002 and raised a school record $476 million.

Mr. Clark has spent his entire career with Clark Construction and its predecessor companies, George Hyman Construction and OMNI Construction. Clark Construction has transformed the physical environment in the region and beyond. Notable area projects include building the National Museum of the American Indian, the Performing Arts Center at Strathmore Hall, the Washington Convention Center, the Automated People Mover at Washington Dulles Airport, the International Monetary Fund Headquarters, the U.S. Department of Transportation Headquarters and National Archives II nearby the Maryland campus

In the last decade, Clark has built many of the region's signature sports facilities such as Oriole Park at Camden Yards, the MCI Center, FedEx Field and M&T Bank Stadium.

In 1992, the University awarded Mr. Clark an honorary doctorate. He has been honored with the Distinguished Engineering Alumnus Award, the university's Distinguished Alumnus Award, and in 1995 was an inaugural inductee in the University of Maryland Alumni Hall of Fame. Mr. Clark is a long-time member of the Terrapin Club.

Over the years, Mr. Clark has been a member of many boards including the Board of Regents of the University System of Maryland, Martin Marietta, Lockheed Martin, Pepco, GEICO, and CarrAmerica Realty Corporation. Mr. Clark is a Trustee Emeritus of The Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Medicine, and he is also a member of the PGA Tour Golf Course Properties Advisory Board.

Mr. Clark and his wife Alice live in Easton.
