WHAT: Reception to announce winners of the University of Maryland's 2009 Inventions/Inventors of the Year awards. Each year a panel of judges made up of University of Maryland personnel and industry experts selects winners in each of three categories: information science, life science and physical science. The winners are chosen based on the creativity, novelty and potential benefit to society of their inventions. Many past winning inventions have formed the basis of successful companies and/or commercial products. Since 2007, six companies have been started with nominated technologies as their foundational product. Remedium Technologies, which was the 2008 Invention of the Year in life science, started to develop biodegradable sponge and spray-on bandages from the shells of crustaceans. They currently have seven employees and have been featured on WUSA-9, the Washington, DC ABC news affiliate.
