Maryland Day 2012 - Media Information
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland Day - the University of Maryland's popular - and free - open house - celebrates its fourteenth anniversary April 28 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Now one of the top annual events in the state of Maryland (we hosted 97,000+ visitors last year), the university welcomes the entire Washington, D.C. region to have fun, learn and explore.
All over Maryland's 1250 acre campus, visitors can "Explore Our World" with tours, exhibits and demonstrations. The university is broken up into six specific areas of exploration, learning and fun: Science and Tech Way, Ag Day Avenue, Arts Alley, Sports and Rec Row, Biz and Society Hill, Terp Town Center.
Hornbake Plaza - part of Terp Town Center - will focus on health and wellness. Don't miss the popular Cooking Stage. Alumna Joy Bauer - best known as The Today Show's nutrition and health expert - will return to host one of the cooking demonstrations. Dining Services will be cooking up some delicious - and healthy - recipes and samples are free!
There are more than 430 events this year - the most ever! All events are family-friendly and provide a great way to discover what a top 20 research university is all about.
Of course there's more - tours for prospective students, live performances, a kid's carnival, learn how to dig for historic treasure just like a Maryland archaeologist, get free fingerprinting for your kids, tour the largest neutral buoyancy tank on the East Coast. And don't miss the autograph sessions with our men's and women's basketball teams, as well as the men's football team and Head Coach Randy Edsall.
Want more? Have "ducky" fun at the ODK Fountain on the mall, get your pre-schooler's speech-language skills tested, get blown away by a wind tunnel, have your picture taken with our Topiary Testudo outside Cole Field House, and don't forget the instrument petting zoo and other great events at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center. You can even watch a men's lacrosse game at 2pm in Byrd Stadium! And there's always a scoop of Maryland ice cream at The Dairy!
Maryland Day operates rain or shine from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 28.
