University Ranks 13th In Retaining Black Students Black Issues in Higher Education rated the university 13th among traditionally white institutions in retention of black students. The retention rate for black students was 48% in the latest years studied (1997-98), the total student retention rate 64%.

Professor And Sprawl In Loudoun County
For 14 years, Margaret Palmer, associate professor of biology, has mined the wondrous waters of Virginia's Goose Creek to discover new species of fresh water invertebrates. Palmer, who is also senior ecologist at the National Science Foundation, earned media attention for her efforts to prevent sprawl from poisoning Goose Creek.
