World University Rankings 2011-2012

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings employ 13 separate performance indicators designed to capture the full range of university activities, from teaching to research to knowledge transfer. These 13 elements are brought together into five headline categories, which are:

  • Teaching — the learning environment (worth 30 per cent of the overall ranking score)
  • Research — volume, income and reputation (worth 30 per cent)
  • Citations — research influence (worth 30 per cent)
  • Industry income — innovation (worth 2.5 per cent)
  • International outlook — staff, students and research (worth 7.5 per cent).

U.S. News & World Report Undergraduate Rankings, Top Public Universities

  • The university is 17th in the ranking of national public universities.

    University of Maryland Named a Top 20 Green School by Sierra Magazine

    The University of Maryland jumped to No. 20 in Sierra magazine's fifth annual ranking of the nation's top 100 "Coolest Schools." Maryland climbed 47 places from its 2009 spot on this list of "universities and colleges with the greatest commitment to sustainability and learning about it outside the classroom."

    According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), which is maintained by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, Maryland ranks 38 among the world's research universities. (UMD is No. 13 among U.S. Public Universities, No. 29 among all U.S. universities).
