Institute of Higher Education (Jiao Tong University, Shanghai) World's Top 100 Universities Ranking

In the recently released Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), Maryland maintained its status as No. 37 among global universities, No. 28 among U.S. universities, and No. 12 among all U.S. public universities.

In the following four ARWU 'Subject' rankings, UM stands out globally and among its peers, the top 25 public universities in U.S. News & World Report.

  • The university is 18th in the ranking of national public universities.
  • With the release of these rankings, Maryland has 28 programs overall in the magazine's Top 10 rankings (undergraduate and graduate), and 78 programs in Top 25 rankings.

    Programs to Look For

    U.S. News also ranks "a list of schools with outstanding examples of academic programs that are believed to lead to student success."

    "With the help of education experts, including staff members of the Association of American Colleges and Universities, we identified eight such types of programs. We then invited college presidents, chief academic officers, deans of students, and deans of admissions from over 1,300 schools to nominate up to 10 institutions with stellar examples of each program type."

    Within the eight categories, UM ranked in five. (UM is is the only member of U.S. News's Top 25 Public Universities to rank in as many as five categories.) <

    • First-Year Experiences : "Orientation can only go so far in making a freshman feel connected. Many schools now build curriculum first-year seminars or other academic programs that bring small groups of students together with faculty or staff on a regular basis."

    • Internships/Co-Ops: "Schools voted into this category require or encourage students to apply what they're learning in the classroom out in the real world--through closely supervised internships or practicums, or through cooperative education, in which a period of study typically alternates with one of work."

    • Learning Communities: "In learning communities, students typically take two or more linked courses as a group and get to know one another and their professors well. Some learning communities are also residential."

    • Service Learning: "In service-learning programs, volunteering in the community is an instructional strategy -- and a requirement of a student's coursework. The service relates to what happens in class and vice versa."

    • Undergraduate Research/Creative Projects: "Independently or in small teams, and mentored by a faculty member, students do intensive and self-directed research or creative work that results in an original scholarly paper or other product that can be formally presented on or off campus."

    UM is again first in graduating African American students (a combined 878 undergraduate, master's and doctorate degrees) among its peers who constitute the Top 25 Public Universities, as ranked by U.S. News & World Report.

    UM is No. 1 in awarding black Ph.D degrees among its top public university peers, and No. 2 in awarding master's degrees (Maryland at 160 and Michigan at 195).

      UM is No. 20 at the World Finals of the Association for Computer Machinery (ACM) International Collegiate Programming Contest. It is the top finisher among North American public universities and No. 4 among all U.S. schools.

      UM ranks No. 5 among the most active 'Twittering' U.S. schools


    Webometrics (Spain) Web Rankings of World Universities

      UM is No. 19 among the world's most cybersavvy institutions.


    Journal of Blacks in Higher Education

      The Journal surveyed U.S. flagship universities to determine which schools improved the most in graduating black students. UM, which raised its graduation rate by 20 percent, from 46% (1998) to 66% (2008), ranks No. 4.


    Financial Times

    The U.K.'s Financial Times ranked the Smith School of Business No. 20 in the U.S. and No. 44 worldwide .
