U.S. News also ranks "a list of schools with outstanding examples of academic programs that are believed to lead to student success."
"With the help of education experts, including staff members of the Association of American Colleges and Universities, we identified eight such types of programs. We then invited college presidents, chief academic officers, deans of students, and deans of admissions from over 1,300 schools to nominate up to 10 institutions with stellar examples of each program type."
Within the eight categories, UM ranked in four. (UM is is the only member of U.S. News's Top 25 Public Universities to rank in four categories.)
- First-Year Experiences (24 ranked schools, no numerical rankings): "Orientation can only
go so far in making a freshman feel connected. Many schools now
build curriculum first-year seminars or other academic programs
that bring small groups of students together with faculty or staff on
a regular basis."
- Learning Communities (22 ranked schools): "In learning communities, students
typically take two or more linked courses as a group and get to know one
another and their professors well. Some learning communities are also
residential."
- Service Learning (25 ranked schools): "In service-learning programs,
volunteering in the community is an instructional strategy -- and
a requirement of a student's coursework. The service relates to what happens
in class and vice versa."
- Undergraduate Research/Creative Projects (33 ranked schools): "Independently or
in small teams, and mentored by a faculty member, students do intensive
and self-directed research or creative work that results in an original
scholarly paper or other product that can be formally presented on or
off campus."

UM is first again in graduating African American students (a combined 858 undergraduate, master's and doctorate degrees) among its peers who constitute the Top 25 Public Universities, as ranked by U.S. News & World Report.

Diverse: Issues in Higher Education Undergraduate Rankings
UM is again one of the strongest producers of minority degrees among all colleges and universities.
UM increased it minority undergraduate degrees from 1891 to 2082 over last year's Diverse Issues rankings. African American undergraduate degrees increased, 636 to 682. Asian American degrees rose from 893 to 1,036; Hispanic degrees dipped from 347 to 345.
