National Communication Association

  • In a National Communication Association survey on doctoral program reputations, the Department of Communication was one of only 15 universities to place three or more research areas in the top ten.
    • Intercultural-International Communication, 5th
    • Political Communication, 8th
    • Rhetorical Communication, 7th

Black Enterprise Magazine

    The University of Maryland moved up to No. 21 in "Top Colleges for African Americans." In the previous two rankings, UM was No. 31 (2001) and No. 22 (2003).

Wall Street Journal

  • The Wall Street Journal again ranked the Smith School of Business among the elite business schools: Maryland is No. 4 among the world's "Regional" schools. ("Regional" is a category of schools that traditionally attract business recruiters from their own region or nation.)
    • Southern Regional School Ranking: No. 2
    • Public Regional Schools Ranking: No. 3
    • Small regional schools ranking: No. 4

    • Management consulting industry ranking: No. 1
    • Technology/telecommunications/Internet industry ranking: No. 3

    U.S. News & World Report

    • The university was 18th in the ranking of national public universities.

    • With the release of the these rankings, Maryland had 70 programs overall in the magazine's Top 25 rankings (undergraduate and graduate), 45 in the Top 15.
    (Undergraduate)

    • The Smith College of Business was ranked 20th in the nation.

      • The entrepreneurship speciality ranked 12th.
      • The finance speciality ranked 18th.
      • The management speciality ranked 13th.
      • The management information systems speciality ranked 7th.
      • The production/operations management speciality ranked 15th.
      • The supply chain management/logistics speciality ranked 8th.

    • The Clark School of Engineering was ranked 22nd in the nation (among schools whose highest degree is a doctorate).

      • The aerospace/aeronautical/astronautical speciality ranked 10th.
      • The mechanical engineering program ranked 23rd

    • Programs to Look For: Under a category separate from the numerical rankings, U.S. News published a listing of schools singled out for their exceptional quality in 8 categories.

      • UM was ranked in four lists (First Year Experiences, Undergraduate Research, Learning Communities and Service Learning). Only two other schools in U.S. News's listing of the top 50 public universities had as many listings.

    • The Financial Times of London ranked the Smith School of Business No. 18 in North America and No. 27 worldwide. Smith also ranked No. 4 overall among U.S. Public Business Schools
