  • Business was ranked 20th in the nation.

A. James Clark School of Engineering

  • Engineering was ranked 24th in the nation.


U.S. News & World Report (Graduate Schools)

College of Arts & Humanities

  • The creative writing program ranked 20th in the nation.

  • The School of Music ranked 30th in the nation.

Robert H. Smith School of Business

  • The MBA program ranked 25th in the nation.

  • The College ranked 22nd in the nation.

In the annual report on graduate schools, the university made the following lists of schools who awarded doctorates to people of color.

  • Total minority degrees, 8th

  • African American degrees, 5th
  • Asian American degrees, 9th
  • Hispanic American engineering-technology/computer science/mathematics degrees, 46th
  • Asian American engineering-technology/computer science/mathematics degrees, 12th

Master's degrees:

  • Total minority degrees, 57th

  • African American degrees, 48th
  • Asian American degrees, 42nd
  • African American engineering-technology/computer science/mathematics degrees, 37th

Money Magazine

  • The university was ranked among the best 100 bargains in college education.


Success Magazine


Business Week

  • In a ranking of information technology research labs, the university tied for 19th among all research labs, and 11th among computer science departments.

  • In artificial intelligence, robotics, natural language, interfaces and data mining, the university was tied for 17th among all research labs and tied for 8th among computer science departments.

Sears Cup

  • Terrapin athletics finished 32nd in the nation in the Sear Cup standings (a measurement of excellence over a broad range of collegiate sports).
