Swine Influenza

The University of Maryland has a number of experts who can address different issues related to the ongoing swine flu epidemic:

Dean Don Kettl - Public Policy (Kettl@umd.edu) - "This is an issue that has swept around the world in lightning speed. At a food cart on the streets of Philadelphia yesterday, two people were talking about the coming plague - and the need to read the Bible. This isn't Armageddon- the government faces a keen test of calibrating its response and the people's reaction. How can we best signal the level of seriousness of the issue to ensure the best preparedness and caution without creating panic? We've long known that a genuine pandemic could strike fast and hit hard. Especially in the aftermath of the 2001 anthrax attacks and SARS, the government has spent a lot of time and energy quietly preparing for the possibility of biothreats, either from nature or from terrorists. From all indications, the preparations were thorough and the nation is ready. But this could prove the first real acid test."

Daniel Perez - Swine and avian flu vaccine development, virus transmission, and pathogenesis; swine as an intermediary species for mutation and transmission of flu strains between birds and humans.

Steven Salzberg - Sequencing the flu genome

Galit Shmueli - Flu surveillance

Jeffrey Herrmann - Software to pinpoint mass vaccination locations

Steven L. Salzberg

Professor

Computer Science

Expertise Key Words:
influenza virus, anthrax, genomics, bioinformatics, evolution, computer science, DNA sequencing, human genome, infectious diseases, vaccines and autism

Expertise Credentials:
Steven Salzberg is the Director of the Center for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (CBCB) and the Horvitz Professor of Computer Science. From 1997 to 2005 he was at The Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR) in Rockville, Maryland, where he was the Senior Director of Bioinformatics, and where he continues to hold an adjunct appointment.

His interest in the human genome project motivated him to develop one of the first computational gene-finding systems for the human genome, in the early 1990s. He was part of the teams that analyzed the human genome as well as the genomes of B. burgdorferi (the Lyme disease bacterium), T. pallidum (the syphilis bacterium), M. tuberculosis, V. cholerae, B. anthracis (anthrax), and over 50 more bacterial, viral, and other species, including plants and animals. Salzberg has contributed analyses to many genome sequencing projects, using computational methods to analyze genome duplications, rearrangements, and other evolutionary phenomena in a wide range of organisms. His recent genomics projects include sequencing and analysis of multiple strains of Bacillus anthracis and of the human influenza A virus.

Salzberg was on the team that sequenced the anthrax contained in anonymous letters mailed in 2001 to members of Congress and the media. In an article in the journal Science (Salzberg et al., Science 2002), the team reported that the anthrax appeared to come directly from Ft. Detrick (USAMRIID).

Dr. Salzberg has authored or co-authored two books and over 175 publications in leading scientific journals. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
