Expertise Credentials:
I hold a Ph.D. in Mass Media and Cultural Studies from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom (2000). I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication in the University of Maryland, College park.
My main areas of research interest focus on Arab and Muslim media, with a special emphasis on the impact of new media on the process of social change in the Middle East, and the media's role in the construction of identities, in general, and the construction of gendered identities, in particular. I also have an interest in analyzing the role of new media in constructing effective inter-cultural dialogue, and the dominant discourses in contemporary Islamic discussion forums.
I published a number of book chapters, journal articles, conference papers, and presented a number of lectures and papers related to these areas of research in the past few years. I also headed the Department of Mass Communication and Information Science in Qatar University (2005-2006).
As an international scholar, I have publications in both English and Arabic, and I participated and presented academic papers in several international conferences, workshops, and seminars in many countries.
I am the co-author of a new book titled: "Islam Dot Com: Contemporary Islamic Discourses in Cyberspace", which will be published by Palgrave Macmillan, New York, in June 2009.
I taught communication courses in a number of prestigious universities, including The American University in Cairo, Cairo University, Ain Shams University, University of Manchester, Qatar University, and the University of Maryland, College Park.
