US Nuclear Weapons Strategy and Nuclear Security Summit
The United States is swearing off the development of new generations of nuclear weapons and will reduce its reliance on them in a sweeping overhaul of its nuclear strategy. President Obama announced the sweeping changes to US Nuclear Policy Tuesday, April 6 - just two days before signing a new nuclear arms treaty with Russia. President Obama is hosting dozens of world leaders in a nuclear security summit in Washington next week.
The University of Maryland has a number of faculty experts who can put US nuclear strategy - and its impact - into perspective. Feel free to contact any of our experts directly. Experts are listed alphabetically.

Expertise Credentials:
Thomas Schelling, emeritus distinguished university professor in the Department of Economics and the School of Public Policy, won the 2005 Nobel Prize in Economics for his work in game theory. Schelling has published highly influential works in a number of areas including climate change, energy and environmental policy, nuclear proliferation and arms control, terrorism, organized crime, and racial segregation.
Schelling is best known for his books The Strategy of Conflict and Micromotives and Macrobehavior. Most recently, he contributed the first chapter (Climate Change: A Bundle of Uncertainties) to the multi-author work "Changing Climate, Changing Economy" (2009). In this work, he says that the economic impact of climate change will fall disproportionately on developing nations and that industrialized countries will need to bear much of the cost.
His renowned work in the 1960s on nuclear deterrence helped shape Cold War strategies. In 1993, the National Academies honored him "for his pioneering work in the logic of military strategy, nuclear war, and arms races which has profoundly influenced our understanding of this crucial subject."
Schelling began his career in 1945, working for the U.S. Bureau of the Budget. He later served in the Economic Cooperation Administration in Europe and as an adviser in the Truman administration. He taught for many years at Yale and Harvard, and has been honored with membership in the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine and as a fellow in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He joined the University of Maryland faculty in 1990.
