Inauguration Challenges: High Tech Solutions

High-tech solutions can help address the many security and technical challenges surrounding the Obama inaugural events. University of Maryland technical experts are contributing to this effort and can comment on preparations and challenges.

For example, transportation and security officials are using the University of Maryland's Regional Integrated Transportation Information System developed at the University's Center for Advanced Transportation Technology (CATT).

This system fuses, translates, standardizes and puts together data obtained from multiple agencies in the region in order to provide an enhanced overall, real-time view, or digital map, of traffic conditions across the region's transportation network.

And what about cell phone traffic? Will the network be able to sustain the likely volume of calls?

A complete alphabetical list with contact information and bios follows this index. Or contact University of Maryland Communications, 301-405-4621; 301-257-0073 (after-hours).

TRAFFIC CONTROL, REAL-TIME MONITORING AND PLANNING

Michael Pack's CATT lab has developed software for security officials to use on Inauguration Day to monitor real-time views of pedestrian, vehicular, air traffic, weather and more -- a wide range of environmental information on one screen. The technology combines data from a variety of sources into this single view. His technicians are working around the clock to prepare for the inauguration. Photo-ops available.

Phillip Tarnoff: Director of CATT (Center for Advanced Transportation Technology) and leader in the development of intelligent transportation systems to monitor, control and plan the flow of traffic.
