Expertise Credentials:
Frances E. Lee joined the faculty at Maryland in the Fall of 2004. She received her Ph.D. in Political Science from Vanderbilt University in 1997. She was a Research Fellow at the Brookings Institution from 1997-98, where she and Bruce I. Oppenheimer co-authored Sizing Up the Senate: The Unequal Consequences of Equal State Representation (University of Chicago Press, 1999). From 1998-2003 she taught in the political science department at Case Western Reserve University. In addition, during the 2002-2003 academic year she worked on Capitol Hill as an American Political Science Association Congressional Fellow in the offices of the Senate Democratic Policy Committee and Congressman Jim Cooper (Tennessee-5). In the Spring of 2004, she was Benjamin Lippincott Visiting Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Minnesota. In addition to Sizing Up the Senate, her research has appeared in the American Political Science Review, American Journal of Political Science, Journal of Politics, and Legislative Studies Quarterly. Her work has received national recognition, including the American Political Science Association's E. E. Schattschneider Award for the best dissertation in American Politics in 1997 and the D. B. Hardeman Award presented by the Lyndon Baines Johnson Award for the best book on a congressional topic in 1999. She was promoted to full professor in 2010.
