Chesapeake Bay/Seafood
Donald Meritt - Shellfish aquaculture specialist, Maryland Sea Grant Extension Program, University of Maryland; Program Director, Horn Point Environmental Laboratory oyster hatchery
Expertise: Culture of oysters and other shellfish, oyster ecology, commercial fisheries, restoration of oyster reefs, hatchery operations
Credentials: Co-directs the Oyster Gardening Program, which brings together scientists and
citizens to help enhance the Chesapeake Bay system's stressed oyster populations

Media Lab Visit
Thomas Rippen - Seafood technology specialist, Sea Grant Extension Program, University of Maryland
Expertise: Seafood processing, listeria, histamines - "I assist seafood processors with pathogen-control procedures, especially pasteurization and other moderate thermal processing methods, and plant sanitation programs (good manufacturing practices, cleaning, sanitation and chemical application systems). Listeria control and, most recently, histamine (scombrotoxin) control, are current applied research projects."

Matthew Hare, Assistant professor, biology, University of Maryland
Expertise: Oyster populations -- using genetics to study oyster population processes - "I use genetic markers to study population processes such as reproduction and dispersal in marine organisms. These population processes are fundamental to fisheries management, restoration and evolutionary dynamics. The inheritance of genetic variants produces tracers that allow us to follow the movements of individuals between populations that are otherwise very difficult to study. For example, we cannot radio-collar an oyster larva to determine whether it is retained near a sanctuary reef, but each individual is 'tagged' with a genetic signature that can indicate its origin."
