Ben Bederson - associate professor, Department of Computer Science, past director, Human-Computer Interaction Lab, faculty member, Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS)University of MarylandExpertise - Human-Computer Interaction, computer graphics, information visualization, interaction strategies, and digital libraries.
Credentials - Prof. Bederson has a long-standing interest in applying technology to societal challenges. Two major current related projects are the International Children’s Digital Library, which offers more than 800 complete children’s books in 34 languages in a child-friendly interface on the web. This brings up issues of rights and universal usability. He also works on a project to look at usability of modern voting machines. He has helped develop a number of computer applications including Photomesa, a program to manage digital photographs. Bederson and his wife, Associate Professor Allison Druin, are featured on WAMU-FM's Kojo Nnamdi Show talking about computer issues ("The Computer Guys").
Kent Norman - associate professor, Department of Psychology, faculty member, Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS), University of MarylandExpertise - technology in the classroom; the user interface design of electronic classrooms and of all electronic education in general; hypercourseware; cognitive psychology.
Credentials - Prof. Norman has studied human/computer interaction for a number of years and applied that research in a number of areas. He wrote the first book about computer menu selection in 1991 called The Psychology of Menu Selection: Designing Cognitive Control at the Human/Computer Interface. More recently, he has been studying the user interface design of electronic classrooms. His work to develop what he calls "Hypercourseware" led to his online book Teaching in the Switched on Classroom: An Introduction to Electronic Education and HyperCourseware.
