*COLLEGE PARK, Md - The University of Maryland offers reporters a number of resources for researching education-related stories ranging from early childhood to higher education. Along with its experts, the College of Education and School of Public Health have a number of centers and institutes (listed below) that can serve as great starting points.

The College of Education also operates the Center for Young Children which not only provides early childhood education, but a facility for training, research and observation.

CRCC logo The Center for Children, Relationships, and Culture

The Center (Department of Human Development) works to create joint research projects to study the social, cognitive, and emotional development of children. It coordinates a weekly colloquium and seminar series and hosts visiting scholars from around the world .


Research Centers within the Dept. of Measurement, Statistics and Evaluation

The Department of Measurement, Statistics and Evaluation oversees three research centers - including the Maryland Assessment Research Center for Education Success (MARCES), the Principled Assessment Design for Inquiry in Science (PADI) and the Center for Integrated Latent Variable Research (CILVR)

The center - a division of the Maryland Institute of Minority Achievement and Urban Education (MIMAUE) works to help make the expertise and research work of the College of Education more relevant to the needs of participating school systems - specifically the Prince George's County and Anne Arundel County Public School Systems.


* Maryland Institute for Minority Achievement and Urban Education (MIMAUE)

The Maryland Institute for Minority Achievement and Urban Education is an academic association, an action-oriented collaborative, and an educational center. Its central goals are the improvement of minority achievement, the elimination of the achievement gap, and the improvement and reform of urban education. Projects range from the Bladensburg Project to Spanish classes for educators.


* Mid-Atlantic Center for Mathematics Teaching and Learning

A collaborative effort by mathematics and mathematics education faculty at the University of Maryland, the University of Delaware, and The Pennsylvania State University. The Center currently supports studies and research of 45 doctoral and post-doctoral fellows. Funding is provided by the National Science Foundation.


* Maryland Literacy Research Center

The center's reseach looks at literacy from many angles. Literacy is studied as a process, to see how it develops and is learned. Research includes looking at ways to improve the teaching of literacy in the classroom as well as how best to assess and test students. The center works to improve teacher education in literacy and studies literacy learning and instruction for minority students.


* Special Education Research Centers within the College of Education

Family Science Dept. in the School of Public Health, University of Maryland

The Department of Family Science is based in Maryland's School of Public Health . Ongoing research includes education-related topics. The department also operates a Family Service Center that provides a wide range of family-related services. There's also the Family Involvement Laboratory in the Maryland Population Research Center - which focuses on examining the ways parents are involved in their young children's lives and the ways in which parents influence their children's development.
