as a Second Language

Prof. Blejer Perla Blejer - professor and director of the Second Language Education and Culture Program, University of Maryland
Expertise - second language acquisition, foreign language education methodology, language program administration in higher education, and issues of equal opportunity for at-risk students and disadvantaged populations. Throughout her career Dr. Blejer has been committed to academic excellence and student success. She believes in the value of inclusion, teamwork, and professional growth.

Credentials - an extensive world traveler, Prof. Blejer has taught courses in foreign language methods, curriculum design, educational psychology and sociology at the college level. She also taught foreign languages in high school. Her professional experience includes teacher training in the field of teaching foreign language and curriculum design.

Millicent Kushner - assistant professor, Department of Curriculum and Instruction, University of Maryland
Expertise - oral and literacy development of English language learners with and without disabilities; reading in a first language; what teachers need to know about first and second language acquisition; bilingualism; developing literacy in a second language, distinguishing language differences from language-related disabilities.

Credentials - an internationally known scholar, Prof. Kushner has presented her research throughout the United States. She has written extensively about bilingualism, strategies for teaching English as a second language, teaching a second language to the learning disabled, and related issues.

Prof. Oxford Rebecca Oxford - professor and former director of the Second Language Education Program, University of Maryland
Expertise - teaching English as a second language; foreign language education, student learning styles.

Credentials - internationally known expert and speaker on the teaching of English as a second language. Prof. Oxford is the author or more than 100 refereed articles and chapters and numerous books including Language Learning Strategies: What Every Teacher Should Know, Language Learning Strategies Around the World: Cross Cultural Perspectives, Language Learning Motivation: Pathways to the New Century, and Patterns of Cultural Identity. She is also the co-editor of the Tapestry language learning book series used in colleges and universities around the world; her two surveys, one on learning strategies and the other on learning styles, have been used by other people in dozens of dissertations and published works. Former director of the Second Language Education Program at the University of Maryland.
