Bullying, Conflict Resolution
and School Violence

Prof. Gottfredson Gary Gottfredson - professor, Department of Counseling and Personnel Services, University of Maryland
Expertise - character education, delinquency prevention in schools, diversity, urban and minority student achievement, vocations, career assessment, psychological measurement, job classification and analysis, school climate, delinquency and drug prevention.

Credentials - the author of numerous articles and book chapters on a wide range of school-related issues. Prof. Gottfredson has testified before congressional committees many times. A licensed psycologist, he is the president of Gottfredson Associates, Inc. which provides program evaluation; survey, measurement, and career assessment research as well as the development and publication of school assessment tools. Recent research has looked at what schools are doing to prevent problem behavior and at character education.

Prof. Leone Peter Leone, professor and Gemstone Fellow, Department of Special Education, University of Maryland
Expertise - emotional and behavioral disorders of children and adolescents, juvenile corrections, substance abuse, secondary education.

Credentials - internationally known expert who has spoken widely about the effective treatment and instruction of behaviorally disordered youth. His experience includes direct service to troubled youth as well as field-based research which examines the multidimensional problems associated with behavior disorders. Dr. Leone points to the role of environmental and cultural factors in the inception of behavior disorders, and believes educators need to take a multidisciplinary approach when implementing programs for troubled or troubling youth. Prof. Leone directs the National Center on Education, Disability and Juvenile Justice, a research, training and technical assistance project funded by the U.S. Department of Education.

Prof. Rubin Ken Rubin - professor, Department of Human Development, University of Maryland
Expertise - helping children deal with bullying; parenting beliefs and behaviors; friendship; peer exclusion and victimization; cultural influences on peer and parent-child relationships

Credentials - director of the Center for Children, Relationships and Culture; Professor Rubin has written extensively about bullying and its effects on children. He is also director of the Laboratory for the Study of Child and Family Relationships. His book, The Friendship Factor won the 2002 National Parenting Publication "Gold Award." Dr. Rubin is a Past-President of the International Society for the Study of Behavioral Development (ISSBD).

Prof. Killen Melanie Killen - professor, Department of Human Development, University of Maryland
Expertise - social and moral development, social reasoning about prejudice, exclusion, and fairness, conflict resolution and autonomy; peer relationships; school environments and positive youth development

Credentials - Internationally known expert on children's and adolescents' social development. Editor of the Handbook of Moral Development, consultant for Sesame Street Workshop, consultant for the U.S. Government's Federal Mediation and Conciliation Services, children and video games including development of the Coolschool anti-violence computer game, Youth Initiative program on conflict resolution, and other agencies; author of numerous articles and chapters on a wide range of issues including childhood morality, exclusion in childhood, prejudice, conflict resolution, and peer relationships.
