Nutrition in School and College

Expertise - runs the Nutrition Services unit of the Health Education Department at the University of Maryland's Health Center.

Credentials - the center serves all students, faculty, and staff associated with the campus community. Services include disease prevention and wellness instruction as well as medical nutritional therapy for chronic medical problems such as diabetes, obesity, eating disorders, and irritable bowel syndrome. Among other health issues, Jakubczak has worked with students on the "Freshman 15" for many years and gives a talk about weight control each fall.

Prof. Mehta Mira Mehta- Director, EFNEP & Extension Specialist, Family & Consumer Sciences Nutrition & Food Science (NFSC), College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, University of Maryland
Expertise - diabetes in minority populations; obesity in children; community, youth and international nutrition.

Credentials - Professor Mehta has collaborated on a number of nutrition programs including:

  • The training and implementation of Eat Right Keep Moving to increase physical activity and improve health and diet in Baltimore City Elementary Schools, 4th and 5th grade curriculum.
  • The introduction of community-based diabetes education for the reduction of race (and ethnic)-based disparities in Maryland.
  • A food systems assessment of Baltimore City.
  • A Program to improve birth outcomes for pregnant teenagers in Prince George's County Public Schools.
