Professor

Biology

Expertise Key Words:
Fish, hearing, anthropogenic sound, effects of sound on animals, evolution of hearing, ear structure, psychoacoustics, inner ear, pile driving, seismic air guns, sonar effects on animals, noise effects on animals

Expertise Credentials:
Editor of 30 of books on hearing and over 160 peer-reviewed papers. Fellow of the AAAS and Acoustical Society of America. Served as chair of a National Research Council panel on effects of sound on marine organisms. Basic research projects include hearing by fishes, evolution of hearing, ultrasound detection by fish, hearing in primitive fishes, the auditory system of deep-sea fishes, etc. Applied research include effects of seismic air guns and on sonar on hearing. Current studies involve effects of sonar on fish hearing, aquaculture noise on fish growth and development, effects of barging on survival of endangered salmonid fishes, and potential use of sound to control behavior of fishes. Author of recent report on effects of pile driving and other sounds on fish. Broad interest in the effects of sound on animals both from a practical and theoretical approach.
