Spent 10 years at the Rowett Research Institute in Aberdeen, Scotland, where he conducted physiological and metabolic research in lactating and growing ruminants (cattle, goats, etc.). Specific areas of expertise include: mass spectrometry, and amino acid, energy, glucose and fatty acid metabolism (ie. metabolomics). Current research at UMD examines the connectivity of amino acid, carbohydrate and fatty acid nutrition and utilisation through investigation of related metabolic pathways. Aim is to define control points, potential and limitations in the use of dietary nutrients by ruminant and nonruminant (fish, poultry) farmed animals. Currently sits on National Research Council to establish nutrient requirements for small ruminants, including sheep, goats, deer and elk.
