AES-Wye Research & Education Ctr

Expertise Key Words:
Ecohydrology; watershed nutrient transport processes; groundwater nitrate; cover crops; phosphorus budgets; nitrogen cycling; upland placement of Chesapeake Bay dredge material; nitrate uptake by native grasses in riparian buffers; biofuel potential of switchgrass; alternative fuel

Expertise Credentials:
I have worked on nutrient transport issues in the Chesapeake Bay watershed for more than 20 years. The overall focus of my research is on the development of agricultural production systems that minimize nutrient losses while enhancing the long term sustainability of agricultural production. The focus of my current research is on: optimizing environmental benefits from riparian buffers, integrating winter cover crops into Maryland crop production systems, assessing groundwater nitrate storage in the Corsica River watershed, developing upland placement options for Chesapeake Bay dredge material, assessing and opitmizing the statewide potential for winter cover crops to reduce nitrate loads from cropland in Maryland, assessing the potential of switchgrass as a biofuel, and assessing the potential of various grasses to remove nitrate from shallow groundwater.
