Professor Somaya's research has focused primarily on the ways in which companies use and strategize about intellectual property, and how this impacts entrepreneurship and innovation in the economy. His work on patent strategies in the context of patent litigation has won two prestigious awards (for Best Dissertation and Best Paper) from the Academy of Management, the premier association of academic scholars in management. His research spans intellectual property strategies in multiple industries (computers, software, semiconductors, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals), as also in the university and international contexts. Dr. Somaya has received research grants/contracts from the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development), the NBER (National Bureau for Economic Research), and the Graduate Research Board at the University of Maryland. His current interests are oriented towards understanding the linkages between intellectual property protections and entrepreneurship. In 2005-06, he was Dingman Entrepreneurship Research Fellow at the Robert H. Smith School of Business.
