Maryland Day Highlights:
Bus Road-E-O

By Ken Lai

Find out who has the street smarts and the driving panache at the Bus Road-E-O at lots 9B, 9C and 11C. During this all-day event, student drivers and staff from the University of Maryland Department of Transportation Services will "duke it out" in buses and maintenance vehicles in a variety of contests.

UM Busses Buzz Through the Obstacle CourseAs Maryland Day attendees leave Ag Day Avenue events, they will immediately see Shuttle-UM buses buzzing through a challenging obstacle course. Modeled after state and national Bus Road-E-O's, drivers will speed through a curvy road littered with cones. Drivers will lose points and time should they knock over the cones.

A thrill of a different kind can be found at the bus-pulling contest, located next to the obstacle course. Here, teams of five to eight people will compete by tugging a shuttle bus towards the finish line, which would take one to two minutes to reach, depending on the strength of the team. Teams will pull the buses next to each other.

Watch these same teams compete in Bus-ketball. As team buses circles in a pre-determined route, the team will shoot playground balls toward the "basket" for points. There are just a couple rules, however. Players have to be seated and cannot lean out of the window.
Daihatsu Stuffing Contest

Finally, these teams will compete in a Daihatsu stuffing contest, featuring some of the smallest vehicles on campus. Teams will attempt to stuff as many people in the shortest period of time into a maintenance vehicle designed to fit only one to two people.

For safety precautions, only Department of Transportation Services can participate and only certified bus drivers can attempt the driving portions of the contests. All students, parents and faculty are welcome to come meet the people who keep the campus moving..
