Veterans Day 2004 will be a special day of remembrance at the University of Maryland. During a ceremony to be held on November 11 from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the Memorial Chapel, the names of more than 1100 Americans who have died in Afghanistan and Iraq will be read aloud. "In the midst of life as a university community, we stop to come together to remember, and to give thanks for those who have given their lives in service to their country," says Chaplain Elizabeth Platz, the Lutheran chaplain on campus who helped plan the ceremony.

The Veterans Day program includes:

The Army ROTC will post the colors followed by the laying of a memorial wreath by University of Maryland President, Dr. Dan Mote.

During a period of quiet reflection, chaplains and students will read the names of the more than 1100 veterans who have died in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The Air Force ROTC will retire the colors and the wreath, accompanied by the memorial candle, will be moved to the front steps of the chapel for a one-hour candle light vigil.

Led by campus administrators, vigil candles will be lit, with each candle representing 100 of the fallen veterans.

In case of rain, the vigil candles will be placed on the Memorial Chapel portico.

The Veterans Day ceremony also kicks off a plan aimed at putting the "memorial" back into the Memorial Chapel. When the building was dedicated October 12, 1952, the chairman of the Board of Regents, Judge William P. Cole, Jr., said that the chapel had been erected "in loving remembrance of those who died in defense of their country, who gave their lives to protect principles of freedom under a just God and in the hope that it would help all of us to attain blessed immortality." Part of that remembrance was a Memorial Book that included the names of those students and alumni "Who Have Lost Their Lives In The Service of Their Country." 209 names were inscribed in that book on the day the Memorial Chapel was dedicated. Most are from World War II, with a very few from World War I and Korea.

Chapel Coordinator (in 2004), Julie Luce says, "Unfortunately, the book was never kept up. We want to change that". It will be a daunting task, but one that chapel officials hope Maryland alumni, families and friends will take on as a challenge so that all who lost their lives can be honored. A new web page will allow names to be entered over Internet. "Not only will we take those names and inscribe them in the Memorial Book," says Luce, "we will also make them available online to serve as a living memorial for our entire university community."

The book itself was placed in the University of Maryland Archives at Hornbake Library for safe keeping after being on display in the chapel for many years. Maryland Archivist Anne Turkos says that plans call for the current book, or a new one, to go back on display at the Memorial Chapel once the inscription of new names begins. "We want this to serve as an inspiration to the entire university community," says Turkos. "This is an important way we can remember all those at Maryland who gave their lives in service to our country."
