Distinguished Panel Reassesses Post-Sept. 11 World

WHAT:
Top international relations experts will closely examine the extent to which the Sept. 11 attacks have fundamentally altered the world order. "It's too easy to portray a new reality that reflects the way analysts would like things to be," says Shibley Telhami, the symposium organizer and Sadat Professor for Peace and Development at the University of Maryland. "To confront the opportunities and risks in the current situation, we've assembled some of the most influential thinkers and analysts." The panel will answer media and audience questions during the two-hour session.

WHO:
Panel Members: Thomas Friedman, foreign affairs columnist, New York Times; Thomas Schelling, a specialist in international affairs, national security, terrorism, and nuclear strategy at the Maryland School of Public Affairs and a member of the National Academy of Sciences; Kenneth Waltz, Columbia University political scientist and one of the leading and most influential thinkers on world affairs; Shibley Telhami, political scientist, Middle East specialist, and board member of the U.S. Institute of Peace. Ernest Wilson III, an expert on globalization in Africa and the developing world and director of the University of Maryland's Center for International Development and Conflict Management, will serve as discussant.
