University Initiatives

The University of Maryland, College Park (properly referred to as The University of Maryland, UM or simply Maryland) is a public research university located in the city of College Park in Prince George's County, Maryland outside Washington, D.C. in the United States of America. Founded in 1856, the University of Maryland is the flagship institution of the University System of Maryland.

The University is considered to be a "Public Ivy;" an institution that "provides an Ivy League collegiate education at a public school price."With an enrollment of some 36,000 students, Maryland is the largest university in the state as well as the Washington Metropolitan Area. It is a member of the Association of American Universities. The University of Maryland's location has created strong research partnerships, especially with the Federal government. Many members of the faculty receive research funding and institutional support from agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Department of Homeland Security.

The University of Maryland is located in College Park, a city in Prince George's County, Maryland. Maryland is one of the original 13 colonies of the United States and is located in the Mid Atlantic region of the United States, bordering Virginia and West Virginia to the south and west, Pennsylvania to the north, and Delaware to the east.

College Park, Md.
The University of Maryland is located about 10 miles from Washington, D.C. and Baltimore and has easy access to I-495 ("The Beltway") and I-95. There is a Metro subway stop in College Park with free shuttle service to campus. The Maryland Transportation Administration's MARC trains also go to the College Park Metro station (Camden Line) from both Baltimore and Washington, D.C.but run only Monday-Friday.
