Dr. Loh told the audience, "To make an impact, we have to address the issues of culture, of values, of ethics, of attitudes... To really develop a culture of innovation and science and engineering, we have to nurture the spirit and the arts and humanities because that is what broadens the sense of excitement and curiosity and imagination."

New Athletics Director
Kevin Anderson is Introduced
To the Media and Terp Nation


Kevin Anderson has been hired as the new director of athletics at the University of Maryland, Acting President Nariman Farvardin and President-Designate Dr. Wallace Loh announced Saturday
(September 4) . Anderson comes to Maryland from the United States Military Academy, where he has directed Army's athletics department since 2004. At Army, Anderson has been responsible for a 25-sport program that served more than 900 cadet-athletes.  

Anderson was introduced by Acting President Farvardin and
President-Designate Dr. Loh in Heritage Hall
at the Comcast Center on campus. Media questions followed.

New Freshment and Transfer Students


Dr. Loh offers welcoming remarks to incoming freshmen
in the Comcast Center. "We will spend our first year
together," he told the students. "I want you to help me
be a president that serves the students of the
University of Maryland." Loh says he'll continue former
President Mote's practice of taking students to
lunch to hear their concerns.

Nelson Mandela: Anwar Sadat Lecture for Peace - 2001

Former South African President Nelson Mandela - 83 at the time - gave the annual Sadat Peace Lecture at the University of Maryland on November 14, 2001. This event was Mandela's first visit to the United States following the 9/11 attacks in New York City.

A Newsdesk press release at the time said: "Mandela, 83, speaks with a special voice. 'No other living political leader commands the respect throughout the world as Mandela,' says Shibley Telhami, who holds the university's Sadat Chair. 'His voice carries moral authority in almost all quarters, and in this time of national and international crisis all will be listening.'"

Ground Breaking Ceremony
Physical Sciences Building

The University of Maryland Physical Sciences Complex has been designed to be the nation's finest university research facility in the physical sciences. When completed, it will provide 158,068 square feet of space for university's outstanding Astronomy and Physics Departments, the remarkable cross-disciplinary Institute for Physical Sciences and Technology, and the Laboratory for Advanced Quantum Science and Joint Quantum Institute, a facility and institute that are partnerships of the University of Maryland and the U.S. Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards and Technology.

Spring Commencement Exercise

More than 7,100 University of Maryland students were joined by family and friends on Thursday, May 20, 2010 to celebrate Maryland's main commencement ceremony. Victoria Reggie Kennedy, widow of U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy, was the featured speaker. Among the celebrated graduates are student medalist Sarah Peitzmeier and student commencement speaker Onyinyechi Ekeand, UM Fulbright Scholars and Terp basketball players Greivis Vasquez, Eric Hayes and Landon Milbourne.

Degrees were presented to 7,144 graduates, including 5,148 bachelor's candidates, 1,520 master's candidates, and 476 doctoral candidates. Criminal justice and economics are tied for the greatest number of undergraduate degrees (457 each), while business and management account for the leading graduate degrees (431). The greatest number of doctorates (38) are in the field of electrical engineering.
